Teams await Euro 16 draw
For the first time the hosts are also part of the draw as this helps them with competitive matches but with points to play for.
France will host the 2016 European championships that will also see Gibraltar enter a qualifying draw for the first time.

Spain tops scoring chart
Going into the final they were two goals behind Germany but scoring four goals in the final made sure they jumped the 2008 runner-up.

Spain wins Euro 2012
This is Spain's third title and they become the first team to successfully defend its title.

Italy beat Euro 2008 finalists Germany 2-1 in the semis to set a date against Group C rival Portugal.
Spain beat Portugal 4-2 after a goalless 120 minutes on penalties to reach the final.

The most popular number of goals scored at the group phase is five with five teams scoring five goals.
Of those five, Russia and Sweden could not qualify to the quarter-finals.

The defending champions left it late to score the goal that meant they finished top of Group C.
Italy also advanced after overcoming Ireland 2-nil. Ireland were already out of the competition for a quarter-final place after losing the first two matches.

Portugal knocks out the Dutch
The Netherlands needed to win by at least a two goal margin but in the end the 2010 World Cup have left the tournament winless.

Euro 2012 kicks off
The second match of the tournament will see Russia play the Czech Republic.
This is the last Euro tournament that will feature 16 teams with the next edition in France going to feature 24 teams.
The Netherlands will kick off Group B with its match against Denmark and the second match in that group will feature Germany against Portugal.
Group C will start with a blockbuster match with the last two champions clashing as Spain take on Italy.
The Republic mark their return to the tournament when they play Croatia.
In Group D, France will face England before co-hosts Ukraine meet Sweden.
Capello resigns from England job
This follows the stripping of John Terry as England manager on Monday.
Capello took England to the 2010 South African World Cup and was scheduled to take England to the 2012 Euro being hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
His resignation leaves England with less than five months to pick up a new manager to take the team to the summer tournament.
Spain grouped with Italy at Euro 2012
This is one of the toughest groups in the tournament with current champions meeting the team they deposed from the throne Italy.
Ireland and Croatia both came through the qualifiers and will have nothing to lose and therefore they will cause a lot of problems for Spain and Italy.
Another tough looking group is Group B. Group B brings Holland, Portugal, Denmark and Germany together.

Croatia to meet Turkey in Euro 2012 playoffs
Croatia had finished second behind Greece in their group whilst Turkey finished behind Germany.
The Republic of Ireland will face off with Estonia whilst Portugal will have to navigate past Bosnia.
The fourth playoff will see the Czech Republic meet Montenegro.
The matches will be played in November.
Germany, Italy, Spain reach Euro 2012
Germany were the first team to qualify when they beat Austria 6-2 last Friday.
Italy and current champions Spain have now sealed their places at the tournament after wins against Slovenia and Liechtenstein respectively.
Poland and Ukraine are joint hosts of the 2012 edition of the tournament.
Just like Euro 2008,
