Dortmund face Bayern challenge

Saturday, 26th February 2011 7:46pm
Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund face a tough challenge in defending champions Bayern Munich in round 24.

Bayern currently lead the form table for the last six matches having accumulated 13 points compared to Dortmund's 12 in third place.

However, in the last six matches the league leaders haven't lost whereas Bayern lost once away to Cologne.

When the two teams met earlier in the season, the league leaders won 2-nil.

There is a 13 points difference between the two teams and a loss for the champions will increase it to 16 whilst a win will help reduce it to 10. After the match only ten matches matches remain.

Here is some of the stats for the two teams so far this season:

2010 final rematch: Inter vs Bayern

Wednesday, 23rd February 2011 1:44pm
The 2009/10 Uefa Champions League finalists, Inter Milan and Bayern, this season meet in the round of 16 clash first leg at the San Siro.

Inter won the final 2-nil last season but this is a new season and so far it hasn't been as good and hence finishing second in the group stages for the defending champions.

The major difference between the two teams is the change in management. The manager who won the final for the first leg hosts, Jose Mourinho has since left for Real Madrid.

Also the manager who navigated Inter's way through the group stages, Rafa Benitez was sacked and and was replaced by Leornardo.

Here is some of the stats for the two teams from the group stages:

Lyon looks for repeat against Real

Tuesday, 22nd February 2011 1:15pm
Last season Lyon knocked out Real Madrid out of the Champions League on their way to reaching the semis.

This season Lyon are meeting Real at the same stage of the competition as last season with Real unbeaten in the competitition so far this season.

Lyon managed to scrap through in the last group phase round to get second place with Schalke taking first place and they will need to play a lot better than they did in the group stages.

In Lyon's favour Real hasn't beaten Lyon in their last six meetings and Real will need to reverse this trend if they are to reach the quarters.

Roar rules both home and away

Saturday, 19th February 2011 4:24pm
In the just ended regular home and away A-League season, Brisbane Roar lost one away match but not surprisingly collected the most points at home and away.

The Wellington Phoenix who lost only twice at the Westpac Stadium come a close second.

If the Phoenix could replicate the home form away, the could have finished second or third on the table instead of sixth.

Here are the two tables for the home and away for each team.

Can the Mariners stop the Roar?

Saturday, 19th February 2011 8:18am
The Central Coast Mariners play the Brisbane Roar in the first leg of the major semi-final.

The Roar has only last one match this season and that was to Melbourne Victory.

As for the Mariners they suffered their heaviest loss of the season against the Roar when they went 5-1 down at home.

The Mariners have a great chance as they play the first leg at home and its a match the team has to win before going to Suncorp.

Away goals will count should the teams be tied at the end of the second leg and so the Mariners will be aiming to stop the Roar from scoring.

Gunners overcome Barca in first leg

Thursday, 17th February 2011 9:47pm
Arsenal won the first leg of their match against Barcelona after coming from behind to win 2-1.

In this round featuring just four fixtures, the Gunners were the only home team to win their match.

Both teams from the Serie A, Roma and AC Milan, failed to take home advantage as they lost by one goal margins.

AC Milan lost 1-nil to Tottenham Hotspurs whilst Roma lost 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk despite scoring first.

The other fixture saw Valencia and Schalke share the spoils in a one all draw.

So with the Gunners trailing behind at half time and then winning at full time, this week I will take a look at the winning trends in all the matches that ended in a result so far in the Champions League:

TrendFrequencyPercentage(%)
Home team leading at half time, home team winning at full time 3542.7
Away team leading at half time, away team winning at full time 1619.5
Home team trailing at half time, home team winning at full time 33.7
Away team trailing at half time, away team winning at full time 11.2
Draw at half time, home team winning at full time 1417.1
Draw at half time, away team winning at full time 1315.9
Matches ending in result 8282.0

So the Gunners become the third home to be trailing at half time and then win by the end of the match.

2010/11 A-League finals format

Monday, 14th February 2011 1:21pm
The 2010/11 season A-League format will be the same as the 2009/10 season with the top six teams qualifying for the finals and the finals running over four weeks.

The top two teams play each other over two legs and the winner goes straight to the grand finals and also gets the right to host it and gets a rest in week three.

The team that finishes second hosts the first leg with the minor premiers hosting the second leg. Away goals rule over these two legs.

So this year the Central Coast Mariners will host the first leg and the second leg will be at the Suncorp.

The loser between the top will play the winner from the third to sixth placed teams in week three of the finals.

With the third to sixth place, third will play sixth placed team and the fourth will play the fifth placed with the higher ranked teams hosting the matches in each case.

These are one-off and the winners in these matches will play each other in week two of the finals with the winner in week two playing the loser between the Roar and the Mariners.

So Adelaide United will host the Wellington Phoenix whilst Gold Coast United will host Melbourne Victory in week one of the finals.

The winners in these matches will play each in the second week of the finals and the winner will then play the loser in the Roar/Mariners match in the third week of the finals.

The fourth week of the finals will be the Grand final.

The rules in full can be found here.

The North Queensland Fury ended their season with another defeat as they lost to the Wellington Phoenix 3-1.

The Fury's position was not going to change with a win as they had already been confirmed wooden spooners but they ended the match with ten man after having a player send off deep into stoppage time.

Last season the Fury just missed on the finals but this season turned out to be worse and they were the only team to lose by a seven goal margin when they lost 8-1 to Adelaide United.

Liverpool complete double over Chelsea

Monday, 7th February 2011 1:24pm
Liverpool complete a double over Chelsea after beating the champions 1-nil at Stamford Bridge.

Following Manchester United's shock loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal's draw with Newcastle, Chelsea were expected to close the gap with a win over Liverpool.

The loss means that Chelsea stay in fourth place and Liverpool rises to sixth.

This is a remarkable rise for a club that was near the relegation places not so long ago.

Wolves shock win over Man Utd ensured they moved from the bottom of the table and have now been replaced by West Ham who lost to Birmingham City.

For the first time this season the "W" teams are now in the bottom four places: West Brom, Wigan, Wolves and Wigan.

Here is a goal margin table showing all the goal margins so far this season:

Goal MarginFrequency
0 74
1 96
2 51
3 20
4 6
5 2
6 5

So winning by one goal is the most popular followed by draws.

Baggies axe Di Matteo

Monday, 7th February 2011 1:18pm
West Bromwich Albion has sacked its manager Roberto Di Matteo after losing 13 of its last 18 matches in all competitions.

Di Matteo took the reigns at The Hawthorns in June 2009 and managed to help the club achieve promotion in the 2009/10 season.

The season started well for the Baggies with wins at the Emirates but over the last two months or so there have been very little to cheer about.

Barca sets new winning streak record

Monday, 7th February 2011 1:12pm
Barcelona set a new record for successive league wins in the Spanish Primera division after seeing off Atletico Madrid 3-nil at the Nou Camp.

The win against Atletico was Barca's 16th consecutive win to surpass the record that was set by Real Madrid of 15 successive wins fifty years ago.

There was a shock result in the round as third placed Villarreal lost at home for the first time this season.

Villarreal lost 1-nil to Levante but still managed to hold on to third place and now have a point advantage over Valencia.

Valencia won the last match of the round 2-nil against Hercules.

This week I take a look at La Liga's away table and here it is:

Roar secure minor premiership

Monday, 7th February 2011 1:05pm
The Brisbane Roar won its first piece in the A-League following the draw between Melbourne Heart and Central Coast Mariners.

Second placed Mariners were the only team that could mathematically overtake the Roar before the AAMI Park fixture but the one-all scoreline meant that Roar can claim with one round to spare.

Wellington Phoenix shocked Adelaide United with a 1-nil win and they are now in pole position to secure the last finals place.

Heart's goalless draw against Mariners means they are now out of the finals in their debut season but Newcastle Jets still have a mathematical chance.
