Record under threat: Bayern vs Mainz

Friday, 24th September 2010 10:26pm
Current league leaders Mainz's unbeaten record will come under threat when they visit the defending champions Bayern Munich in round 6 of the German Bundesliga.

Mainz have a perfect record having won their first five fixtures but against Bayern they meet a team that started slowly and is beginning to find its winning ways.

Bayern has lost one match so far and was involved in two goalless draws but the champions won their last league fixture against Hoffenheim 2-1.

Mainz has so far kept three clean sheets and has won its last two fixtures 2-nil.

Bayern Munich has so far kept clean sheets in drawn matches and not in matches it has won.

Bayern will give the league leaders a good test and so here is some of the stats from the first five fixtures of the season:

Title challengers : Man City vs Chelsea

Friday, 24th September 2010 10:14pm
Premier League defending champions Chelsea will team for the first time this season a team that is challenging them for their title when they play Manchester City in round 6.

Chelsea have got a perfect record having won their first five fixtures and have so far conceded just one goal.

Man City were stunned by a last minute goal away to Sunderland for their only loss of the season but at Eastlands they have won one and drawn one.

Last season Man City were the only team to do a double on Chelsea beating them in both fixtures and they will looking forward to continue that trend if they are to run for the title themselves.

Atletico stops Valencia's march

Thursday, 23rd September 2010 11:27pm
Valencia's 100% win record in La Liga was stopped by Atletico Madrid after the two teams drew one-all.

Atletico were the first to score in the first half and the home team only managed a response in the second half.

That draw also sees Valencia lose top spot to Real Madrid who have a better goal difference.

Elsewhere in round four, Barcelona's lonely strike in the second half was enough to secure three points. This was the champions' first match at home after losing to Hercules in round 2.

Almeria and Real Zaragoza are still to find a win after four matches. Almeria lost 1-nil at home to promoted Levante whilst Zaragoza were held goalless by Hercules.

The table below shows the number of goals conceded by each team after four rounds.

Schalke secured their first league win of the season when they beat Freiburg in round 5 of the German Bundesliga.

With Schalke's win every team has won at least one match with seven teams with a single win.

Mainz are still the only unbeaten team after five matches after beating Cologne 2-nil.

Stuttgart followed their 7-nil massive weekend win with a loss after losing 2-1 to Nuremberg.

Bayen in another goalless draw

Tuesday, 21st September 2010 1:40pm
For the first two rounds of this season's German Bundesliga there were no goalless draws.

Until round three there was only one draw, a one-all draw in a match between Borussia Monchengladbach and Nuremberg.

Round 3 saw the first goalless draw for the league this season and it was between defending champions and Werder Bremen.

In round 4 Bayern repeated the scoreline again as it failed to score against FC Cologne in the first fixture of the round.

There was also another goalless draw in the same round between Bayer Leverkusen and Nuremberg.

VfB Stuttgart scored an impressive 7-nil win over Borussia Monchengladbach and that the first win for the team.

After four rounds, Mainz still tops the ladder and Schalke are still winless.

Old Trafford battle: Man Utd vs Liverpool

Saturday, 18th September 2010 10:07pm
One of key fixtures in round 5 of the English Premiership will be the match at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Liverpool.

Manchester United are in third place on the table and Liverpool are in thirteenth but the gap in points is just three.

A win for the home team will see that gap increase to six but a loss will mean the teams will be equal on points.

The season is just four rounds old but a six points gap could be vital as to where the teams finish at the end of the season.

The Old Trafford outfit has a 100% home record at the moment and will therefore be trying to maintain that against their rivals.

Liverpool hasn't lost away from home so far having drawing one and won one and if they avoid defeat it means they will either be on equal points or just two points adrift.

Saturday, 18th September 2010 10:03pm
In round 3 of La Liga, newcomers Hercules host a fellow team from the Valencia region as they try to secure their first points at home.

Hercules surprised most people after claiming their first win of the season against defending champions Barcelona in a 2-nil win in round 2.

In their first match at home in Alicante, the new league comers had lost 1-nil to Athletic Bilbao.

Valencia on the other hand are one of two teams with a 100% record having won their first two matches.

Valencia started their season away from home and won 3-1 against Malaga and now this will be their second away match of the season.

Schalke may be playing in the UEFA Champions League but they are still to claim a win in the Bundesliga after losing its first three matches.

In round 4 of the German Bundesliga Schalke will host Borussia Dortmund still searching their first league win for the season.

Dortmund lost its first fixture but has since won the next two and therefore will come into this match knowing that a win is a strong possibility.

All the teams that have beaten Schalke so far have scored two goals and in round 3 Schalke fired a blank have scored in the first two fixtures against Hamburg and Hannover 96.

Heart records first win

Tuesday, 7th September 2010 11:16pm
Round 5 of the A-League saw the new Melbourne team, Melbourne Heart record its first win in the A-League.

A first half goal was all Heart needed for the maiden win in a match against the North Queensland Fury.

It wasn't so good for reigning champions Sydney FC who lost 3-1 at home to Adelaide United. Sydney are still without a win after five matches.

The current leaders Perth Glory saw off Wellington Phoenix in a 2-1 win where the Glory went 2-nil before the Phoenix scored their goal.

The only draw of the round saw Newcastle Jets play a goalless draw against the Brisbane Roar.
