Battle of the confederations

Thursday, 26th June 2014 8:44pm
With the group stages now finished, now its time to have a look and see how the teams from the different FIFA confederations fared.

The 11 member Oceania Football Confederation(OFC) was not represented at this tournament after New Zealand lost to Mexico in the play-offs otherwise all the five confederations are represented.

Here is a table showing the performance of each confederation:

UEFA CONMEBOL CONCACAF CAF AFC
Teams 13 6 4 5 4
Won 18 13 5 3 0
Win % 46.2 72.2 41.7 20.0 0.0
Drawn 7 2 3 3 3
Draw % 18.0 11.1 25.0 20.0 25.0
Lost 14 3 4 9 10
Loss % 35.9 16.8 33.3 60.0 83.3
2nd Rnd 6 5 3 2 0
% 2nd Rnd 46.1 83.3 75.0 40.0 0.0
Won Grp 4 3 1 0 0
% Won Grp 30.8 50% 25.0 0.00 0.00

So far the best performing Confederation is the host one with five out of its six teams getting into the second round and half its teams winning their groups.

The worst performing Confederations is the Asian Confederation whose teams failed to get a single win and the best they could do is have two teams getting two draws for its haul of two points.

Spain, Socceroos exit World Cup

Thursday, 19th June 2014 3:11pm
The defending champions Spain and the Socceroos are now out of contention for the second round at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Spain become only the fifth defending champion to exit the tournament at the Group stage level.

The last team to do so was France in the 2002 edition of the tournament hosted by Japan and South Korea.

The Socceroos can only finish on three points if they beat Spain but that will not be enough and they also head home.

The last match between the defending champions and the Socceroos will just be to avoid the wooden spoon. A draw will be enough to consign Spain to fourth place.
