Barca outclass Real in rout

Tuesday, 30th November 2010 11:16pm
Barcelona moved to the top of La Liga after beating arch rivals Real Madrid 5-nil at the Nou Camp.

Real went into the match unbeaten and on top of the league ladder by one point but they one of their heaviest defeats with Barca scoring two goal in the first half.

In two consecutive matches Barca has scored 13 goals with no reply and are now two points ahead on the table.

Before this match Real had failed to score in two goalless draws earlier in the season but this time they suffered their first loss and what could turn out to be the heaviest of the season.

This was the the third time for Barca to score five goals and the seventh to score three or more goals in a match.

Elsewhere in round 13, Hercules won the battle of the promoted sides after beating Levante 3-1 whilst Villarreal kept its hold on third place with a 3-nil win against Real Zaragoza.

The table below shows the goal margins for all the matches in La Liga so far with the Barca win adding more to the five goal margins:

Spurs pushes Liverpool aside to go fifth

Monday, 29th November 2010 10:59pm
For the second week in a row, Tottenham Hotspurs came from behind to win as they beat Liverpool 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool were the first to score in the first half but two goals in the second half sealed the win for Spurs who now sit in fith place on the table a point behind fourth place Manchester City.

Manchester United went to the top of the table after Chelsea could only draw away to Newcastle.

Manchester United won 7-1 against Blackburn and now the team has the same goal difference of 19 goals as Chelsea who are now in second place.

A rare win for West Ham was not enough to lift them up from the foot of the table as Wolverhampton Wanderers also won against high flying Sunderland.

However, the Hammers now anchor the table on goal difference and another win in their next match could take them out of the relegation zone.

With Man United winning by a six goal margin, here is a table showing the rest of the goal margins so far the in the English Premiership:

Goal MarginFrequency
0 50
1 54
2 26
3 11
4 4
5 0

So a one goal winning margin is the most popular winning at the moment.

The Roar shine against the Mariners

Monday, 29th November 2010 10:35pm
Brisbane Roar scored five goals for the first time this season when they beat the Central Coast Mariners 5-1.

This was also the first time for the Roar to score more than three goals away from the Suncorp Stadium.

With 35 goals so far, its not surprising to see that the league leaders are the highest scorers at the moment as they march towards the minor premiership.

Adelaide maintained its second place after beating the Gold Coast 2-1. Following that match the gap between second and third has now stretched to seven points.

Following the weekend matches the table positions stayed as they were last week after Wellington Phoenix/Melbourne Victory, Melbourne Heart/Sydney and NQ Fury/Perth matches all ended in draws.

So this week I will take a look at the different scorelines in the A-League so far:

ScorelineFrequency

0 - 3 2

Second vs first: Barca vs Real

Saturday, 27th November 2010 10:03pm
Its most probably one of the two most important matches in La Liga as Barcelona host Real Madrid.

The other important match being the reverse fixture later in the season at the Bernabeau.

Although this is just round 13, Barca and Real are two teams most probable to occupy the two places at the end of the season.

A win for either team means the team gets an upper hand in the head to head that is used to rank teams should they have the same number of points.

Both teams have been free scoring this season with the two teams scoring 33 goals apiece. The third highest number of goals is 23 for Villarreal.

Real are still to lose a match this season and so Barcelona will be looking forward to inflict their rivals their first defeat of the season.

A win for Real will open a four point gap whilst a Barca win will create a two point lead for them.

Spurs home form faces Liverpool test

Saturday, 27th November 2010 9:46pm
Tottenham Hotspurs has only lost once at White Hart Lane this season and in round 15 of the English Premiership the team will face Liverpool.

Liverpool have won its last two matches and comes to the Lane against a team that replaced it in the top four last season.

Spurs lost at home to Wigan in the third round and since then they haven't lost a match at the Lane.

The two teams are thre places apart on the ladder and they are also separated by three points with the hosts in sixth place.

Therefore a win for Liverpool will see them level on points with Spurs but a loss will see them six points behind.

Away from Anfield Liverpool has only won at the Reebok and this is another chance to win at a tough stadium for away teams.

Bundesliga round 14 : Werder Bremen v St Pauli

Saturday, 27th November 2010 9:12pm
In round 14 of the German Bundesliga, two teams nearer the relegation places Werder Bremen and St Pauli will face each other.

The two teams are separated by just one point with the hosts being ahead.

Werder Bremen's problems so far seems to be defence where the team has conceded a total of 31 goals. Only Borussia M has conceded more.

St Pauli gained promotion last season and their opponents are only better than them in drawing one more match than them and losing one match otherwise both teams have both won four matches.

Schalke, Lyon vie for top spot

Tuesday, 23rd November 2010 9:57pm
Three teams in the UEFA Champions League Group B can still make the knockout stages and Schalke and Lyon meet in a match where a loss could be very damaging.

At the moment Lyon leads group B with nine points having lost to Benfica in round 4 and Schalke are just two points behind.

In the reverse of this one, Schalke lost to the former French champions and this could the team's chance to avenge that defeat.

Both teams started their domestic competitions poorly but have been doing cruising well in the Champions League especially Lyon but a win here will be crucial.

A win for Lyon will almost guarantee them a place in the last 16 with just one more match to go and for Schalke a win will make sure they peg back Lyon and increase their chance of also reaching the knockout stages.

The other team in contention in the group is Benfica and it plays bottom placed Hapoel Tel Aviv, a match Benfica is likely to win.

Benfica and Schalke play each other in the last round of the group matches in what could be a shootout for a place in the knockout phase.

Here is the head-to-head for the two teams in this year's competition:

Gold Coast overtake Mariners after win

Monday, 22nd November 2010 9:59pm
Gold Coast United and the Central Coast Mariners swapped places after the Queensland team won 3-2 in round 15 of the A-League.

The win takes the Gold Coast to within four points of Adelaide United and two teams meet in round 16.

The Mariners still have a cushion of five points between themselves and fifth placed Melbourne Heart who lost to Adelaide.

After beating Melbourne Victory last week Perth Glory could not repeat that feat as they lost 2-nil as the home team scored two late goals.

Glory and Sydney are now separated by just one point.

The North Queensland Fury got a single point in a first versus last match against Brisbane Roar. The Fury could have had the full points but the Roar scored late on in the match to salvage a point.

In this post I will take a look at the current drawing trend as shown in the table below:

Mainz regains second spot as Leverkusen is held

Monday, 22nd November 2010 2:04pm
Mainz regained second spot in the German Bundesliga after winning an away fixture against bottom placed Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2.

That win took Mainz back to second position after Bayer Leverskusen could only draw its home fixture with champions Bayern Munich one-all.

The win puts Mainz back in track but slippages in the last few rounds means the team now trails leaders Borussia Dortmund by seven points.

The league leaders won their fixture against Freiburg 2-1 after coming from behind.

At the bottom, Cologne beat fellow relegation strugglers Stuttgart 1-nil to move of the bottom and be on the same points as Stuttgart.

Monchengladbach are now back anchoring the table.

Here is the current form table and its not surprising to see Mainz near the bottom after recent poor form:

HAL round 15: Mariners vs Gold Coast

Saturday, 20th November 2010 8:38pm
A point separates the Central Coast Mariners and Gold Coast United as the two teams meet in round 15 of the A-League.

All that will change if one of the two teams wins this fixture.

A win for the Mariners will see them four points ahead of the Gold Coast and four points behind second placed Adelaide.

A win for the visitors will see them jump their rivals on the table and create a two point lead whilst being behind Adelaide by five points.

Adelaide meets the Gold Coast next in round 16.

There is a four point cushion between fourth and fifth and therefore a loss for either team means fourth is the lowest position that they will have.

Third vs fourth : Villarreal vs Valencia

Saturday, 20th November 2010 8:27pm
A battle for third place looms in the Spanish Primera Division as Villarreal play Valencia in round 12.

The two teams are separated by three points and win for the hosts will mean they will have a six point advantage over their rivals.

Not only that, a win for the Yellow submarines will mean that they keep in touch with the top two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

A win for Valencia will mean they will have the same points with Villarreal and this is also important for the head to head that is used to determine positions in La Liga.

Villarreal are coming off a defeat against Barcelona whilst Valencia beat Getafe in their last fixture.

However, Valencia lost their last away fixture to Seville and Villarreal won its last home fixture 4-1 against Athletic Bilbao.

Sunderland shock Chelsea to reach top six

Monday, 15th November 2010 2:04pm
Sunderland avenged last season's 7-2 loss to the champions by beating them 3-nil at Stamford Bridge.

This is Chelsea's heaviest defeat so far this season having lost 2-nil and 1-nil before to Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.

This is a second loss in two consecutive weeks for the champions whose lead at the top has now been reduced to two points.

Its interesting to see that so far that when Chelsea has lost, they team has also drawn a blank.

The unlikely win for the Black Cats sees them go into sixth place.

In second place is Arsenal who beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park.

In round 13 there were four draws and only one of them was a scoring draw. This was the draw between Aston Villa and Manchester United which was 2-all.

The other draws were all goalless draws.

Goalless draws are now the third most popular scoreline at the moment with 13 matches finishing with that scoreline.

The most popular scoreline is also a draw, one-all with a total of 19 matches finishing with scoreline.

Glory brushes Melb Victory aside

Monday, 15th November 2010 2:02pm
Perth Glory notched its first win in ten matches when they beat Melbourne Victory 3-1 at the nib Stadium.

The Glory who started the season well have been struggling in the past month or so and in ten matches only managed to score two goals and got just a single point.

They scored three against the Victory team that they had beaten 2-nil at AAMI Park earlier in the season.

In other match also played on Sunday the Brisbane Roar march continued with a 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart.

The Roar had to come from behind with two second half goals that helped secure all three points and they could even afford to miss a penalty.

Having made Westpac Stadium their fortress over the last two years, it doesn't seem to be anymore as Wellington Phoenix lost yet another match at the venue. This time they lost to Central Coast Mariners.

Also on a losing streak but for away matches is Adelaide United. They lost their third consecutive away match to Newcastle Jets.

This week I will take a look at the winning trend so far in the A-League comparing half time to full time result:

EPL round 13: West Ham vs Blackpool

Saturday, 13th November 2010 8:09am
Premier League bottom placed West Ham United will face Blackpool at the back of two 2-all draws.

In their last two matches, the Hammers have taken the lead only for the opposition to score and end up drawing 2-all.

So in the past six matches they have drawn four and lost two and the two lost matches were lost to Manchester United and Arsenal, both away matches.

The Seasiders on the other hand have enjoyed mixed form in their last six matches where they actually accumulated a total of seven points from two wins and one draw.

What makes this match very interesting is that it will be viewed as winnable by both teams.

A win for the Hammers will see them stay in the relegation zone but possibly as bottom placed depending on the Wigan and Wolverhampton matches.

A win for Blackpool could see them rise as far as seventh place on the ladder depending on other matches.

Relegation battle: Cologne vs Monchengladbach

Friday, 12th November 2010 11:39pm
Its just eleven matches into season and Cologne and Borussia Mönchengladbach will be fighting it out to get out of the dreaded relegation zone.

The two teams are separated by just one point and a win for the home team could see them get out of the relegation zone depending on the results coming from the matches involving Schalke, Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern of which the latter two are playing each other.

Goal difference means that a win for the visitors will leave them still in the relegation but Cologne will be the new anchors.

The problem for Mönchengladbach so far has been the number of draws that the team has had and its one of only two teams that have drawn four matches.

Friday, 12th November 2010 11:27pm
Round 11 of the Spanish Primera division will see second placed Barcelona host third placed Villarreal at the Nou Camp.

The two teams are separated by two points with the difference being that the Nou Camp visitors have drawn one more match than Barcelona and one less win.

Both teams have lost one match so far with the match Barcelona lost being a home match against newly promoted Hercules.

Villarreal lost their first match of the season to Real Sociedad and from there on have now gone nine matches unbeaten in the league.

In terms of goals, Barca has scored one more goal than their opponents and have also conceded one less game than them.

Barca will be looking for a win to keep on pressure on league leaders Real Madrid and for Villarreal a win will put them into second.

Tough test: Heart vs Roar

Friday, 12th November 2010 2:00pm
In round 14 of the A-League, Melbourne Heart's recent good form will face a tough test against the high-flying Brisbane Roar.

The Roar are currently on top of the ladder and have scored four goals in their last two fixtures.

Tellingly, in their earlier fixture this season the Roar beat Heart 4-nil but that was at Suncorp Stadium.

The Heart have since had a good run of form and is one of only three teams at the moment to have a lost a match in their last six fixtures. The other two are the Roar and Gold Coast United.

A win for the Roar will cement their hold of first place whilst a win for the home team could see them go as high as third on the table depending on other results.

Manchester derby ends in stalemate

Thursday, 11th November 2010 9:46pm
The Manchester derby between City and United ended in a stalemate after both teams failed to find the back of the net.

In the tenth goalless draw of the season, the two Manchester teams shared the spoils to both stay in the top four places on the ladder.

This was the sixth draw for United which is the second highest number of draws in the premiership at the moment and for City this was only the third draw in a dozen matches.

Elsewhere there were wins for both Chelsea and Arsenal making sure that there were no positional changes in the top four positions.

Bottom placed West Ham United was involved in the second successive 2-all draw against West Bromwich Albion having drawn Birmingham by the same scoreline in round 11.

In both matches the Midlands teams came from behind to snatch a point against the Hammers.

This week I will show the away table having showed the home table in the last premiership review. Here it is showing only the matches played away:

Manchester derby: City vs United

Wednesday, 10th November 2010 1:58pm
Three points separate Mancheste City and Manchester United as they battle it out in the league in round 12 of the English Premier League.

City have just won a match in round 11 against West Bromwich Albion but before that they had lost two league matches and one Europa match.

In their last six matches United have won three and drawn three and a win here will help them put pressure on Chelsea who have a two point advantage.

A win for City means they will catch their city rivals points wise but depending on the scoreline they could stay under them because of goal difference.

Mainz lost its second consecutive match in round 11 of the German Bundesliga but league leaders Borussia Dortmund continued their winning run to open a four point lead.

Mainz will still keep second place despite the loss but they are now four points behind Dortmund.

In third place on the ladder is Bayer Leverkusen who are just three points adrift of MainZ.

Bottom side Borussia Mönchengladbach stopped their recent run of three consecutive defeats with a high scoring draw against champions Bayern Munich.

One outstanding result from round 11 is Stuttgart beating Werder Bremen 6-nil. This is the second highest winning scoreline after Stuttgart beat Mönchengladbach 7-nil in round 4.

Roar extends lead at the top

Wednesday, 10th November 2010 7:59am
Brisbane Roar beat second placed Adelaide United 4-nil to extend their lead at the top of the A-League to four points.

Adelaide lost its second consecutive match after losing to their nearest rivals by a margin that did not reflect that they were the team second on the ladder.

For the Roar this is the second time this season that they have won by a 4-nil scoreline having beaten Melbourne Heart by the same scoreline at Suncorp.

Elsewhere the scorelines were all 1-nil for the winning teams with Sydney, Gold Coast, Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners winning.

Sydney were the only home team in that list to win.

Malaga go for Pellegrini

Saturday, 6th November 2010 12:06am
Malaga has appointed former Villareal and Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini to replace sacked Jesualdo Ferreira.

Malaga takes over a Malaga team that is currently in the relegation zone without a single point from home.

Pellegrini's Real Madrid finished second last season with a record haul of 96 points whilst his Villareal side managed to reach the UEFA Champions League.

At Malaga he faces a different proposition with the immediate being to make sure Malaga remains in the Spanish Primera division.

Malaga's next match is away to Espanyol.

Chelsea to test Liverpool's revival

Friday, 5th November 2010 11:18pm
Liverpool's recent good form will come under the microscope when the team meets champions Chelsea at Anfield in round eleven of the English Premiership.

Two wins for Liverpool against Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers have lifted the Anfield outfit from the relegation zone to 13th on the table.

Position 13 is a far cry for the team that has been used to be in the top four but a win against the table topping Chelsea will see Liverpool go up as far as fifth depending on other results.

Chelsea has only lost once in the league against Manchester City and a win here will make sure the team maintains its five point lead at the top.

In the same fixture last season the visitors won 2-nil on their way to winning the title.

Madrid derby: Real vs Atletico

Friday, 5th November 2010 10:55pm
In Spanish's La Liga round 10, Real Madrid will face off against city rivals Atletico Madrid.

At the moment Real are on top of the ladder with seven wins and two draws and are the only undefeated team in the league.

Despite losing three matches and winning four, Atletico are in the top half of the table and win against their arch rivals will see them land 20 points.

What should be worrying for Atletico is that Real has won its last two home fixtures 6-1 and the lowest winning margin is one goal and that was in just one match early in the season.

The two teams that both lost 6-1, Racing Santander and Deportivo La Coruna were the only ones to score against Real at the Bernabeau.

Atletico's away is not impressive at the moment having won one match and drawn one in four matches.

Here are the stats for the two teams so far in the league.

Top of the table clash: Brisbane vs Adelaide

Friday, 5th November 2010 10:39pm
One of the most interesting fixtures of round 13 of the A-League will see the top teams Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United clash.

The Roar took the first position after beating the Wellington Phoenix 4-1 at Westpac Stadium and this was against a team that had never lost at home for more than two years.

This season the Roar are still to lose at home but in their earlier fixture in round 7 the tie finished one-all.

Adelaide are coming off an away defeat to Melbourne Victory in the previous round and this is a team that was previously undefeated before the Etihad Stadium tie.

A draw would suit the Roar who would remain top but one thing is obvious whoever wins stays top but for the Roar it will open a four point lead.

Rare home defeat for Phoenix, Roar go top

Thursday, 4th November 2010 7:54am
Wellington Phoenix suffered a rare loss at home after losing 4-1 to the Brisbane Roar at the Westpac Stadium.

The Phoenix last lost a home fixture in October 2008 when they narrowly lost 1-nil coincidentally to the Roar.

The Roar loss coupled with the Adelaide loss to Victory takes them to the summit of the A-League table.

Adelaide lost their tenth fixture in a row to the Victory when they lost 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

There are still three teams unbeaten at home so far as the ladder showing only the home matches show:

Malaga has parted ways with its coach Jesualdo Ferreira after an indifferent start to the 2010/11 La Liga season.

To make matters worse for the Malaga fans, the team has failed to register a single point at the La Rosaleda stadium with all the seven points coming away from home.
