Zaragoza hosts Almeria after mauling

Friday, 30th October 2009 10:45pm
Real Zaragoza will host Almeria in round 9 of the Spanish Primera League after losing 6-1 to Barcelona in the previous round.

I think this will be a match for Zaragoza to show that the Barca match was just a blip.

Almeria lost their last match at home 3-nil to Valencia and I think they also have a point to prove after losing by such a margin at home.

Almeria are currently 12th and Zaragoza are three places back in 15th.

This is the rests of the stats:

Gunners, Spurs tussle for third place

Thursday, 29th October 2009 10:32pm
One of the most interesting fixtures in round 11 of English Premiership will see Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspurs.

The two teams are currently tied on 19 but the Gunners have a superior goal difference and they also have a game in hand.

A loss in this match could see Gunners down to eighth place and Spurs to tenth.

A win for either will see the team go second depending on other results but third place would be the lowest position the team will get.

So here is the some of the stats so far this season for the two teams:

Fury face Coast test

Wednesday, 28th October 2009 9:55pm
The North Queensland Fury will meet the Gold Coast coming off from a 6-nil drubbing by the Wellington Phoenix in the last round.

Interestingly the Fury lost 5-nil to Gold Coast in their first match but since then the Fury has tightened its defences and no team has been able to score more three goals against them.

So its going to be interesting to see what the Gold Coast reaction will be in front of their own fans.

Sporting Gijon holds Real

Monday, 26th October 2009 11:20pm
Real Madrid failed to score in a league match for the first time this season after being held to a goalless draw by Sporting Gijon.

The draw means that Real stay in second place and now trail Barcelona by three points after eight rounds.

Barca had a goals fest beating Real Zaragoza 6-1 at home with three goals scored in each half.

This round also the saw the away teams score just seven goals which equal lowest with the goals scored by away teams in round 1.

Villareal won for the first time this season by beating Malaga 2-1. They were the only team without left without a win in La Liga.

So this week I will take a look at the second half ladder which considers only the result from the second half of the match.

TeamPlayedWonDrawLostForAgainstGDPts
Real Madrid 8 4 40 133 1016
Barcelona 8 4 40 93 616

Almeria 8 1 43 37 -47

Interestingly Real and Barca are tied at the top on this with similar records but Real have a superior second half goal difference.

Mallorca is not far way back in third place.

Liverpool ends losing streak

Monday, 26th October 2009 7:48am
Liverpool ended its four match losing streak by beating arch rivals Manchester United 2-nil at Anfield.

Before this match Liverpool had lost two consecutive league and Champions League matches and they ended this run after scoring two goals in the second half.

The win sees Liverpool move to fifth position on the table from eighth and United slip to second.

Manchester City drew with Fulham and slip out of the top five positions.

There was no change at the bottom in terms of position as all four teams at the bottom drew.

At the start of the season there were very few draws but the number of draws has now increased to 15 which is 15.6% of the matches.

So this week I will show you the draws ladder:

TeamPlayedGoals ForPoints
Manchester City 9 43
Stoke City 10 23
West Ham 9 43
Wolverhampton Wanderers 10 33
Aston Villa 9 22
Bolton 9 32

Arsenal 9 21

Manchester United 10 21
Portsmouth 10 01
Sunderland 10 21
Tottenham 10 21
Wigan 10 11
Burnley 10 00
Chelsea 10 00
Liverpool 10 00

So Chelsea, Burnley and Liverpool are now the only teams still to draw a match.

Phoenix routs Gold Coast

Monday, 26th October 2009 7:29am
Without a doubt the standout result of round 11 of the A-League is Wellington Phoenix beating the Gold Coast United 6-nil.

The Phoenix went into this match after six consecutive draws and the Gold Coast were on top of the ladder.

The result wiped most of the Gold Coast goal difference and they now drop to third on the table.

The North Queensland Fury won at home for the first time in a round where for the first time all home teams won. There were no draws.

The Fury is also the first home team to be trailing at half time and winning at the end of the match. Perth Glory was leading 1-nil at half time.

Elsewhere there were wins for Sydney FC who now go top, Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets.

This week I take a look at the form table. The form ladder shows the matches only from the last six matches and here it is:

Milan shocks Real to go top

Thursday, 22nd October 2009 9:55pm
AC Milan came from behind to beat the highly fancied Real Madrid at their own turf and leap to the top of Group C.

This was Real's first defeat in the competition this season and they now move to second on head to head.

Elsewhere, there were home wins for Chelsea, Bordeaux, Porto and Juventus.

Manchester United and Marseille recorded away wins and it was the 14th consecutive away match for Manchester without a loss.

The last away loss for the Old Trafford outfit was a 3-nil loss to AC Milan at the San Siro in May 2007.

This week I take a look at the winning margins so far in the competition:

Goal MarginFrequency
0 11
1 22
2 8
3 5
4 2

So the most popular winning margin so far is by one goals and no team has so far won by a winning margin of more than 4 goals.

It would be interesting to check at the end of round 6.

The two teams enter into this fixture from two different round 11 matches were the Mariners won away 3-nil against Brisbane Roar and Jets lost 3-1 to Melbourne Victory.

If the Jets lose they could possibly end the weekend anchoring the ladder if the North Queensland Fury earn at least a point from their match.

Rubin Kazan stunned after beating the defending champions Barcelona 2-1 at Nou camp.

Kazan went to half-time leading 1-nil and even though Barca was able to level soon after the interval, it was Kazan who had the last say as they went on to score the winner.

In a night where only one home team won, Olympiakos over Standard Liege, former champions Liverpool also lost 2-1 to Lyon.

Inter Milan were held to draw and so were Arsenal.

Unirea Urziceni were the biggest wiinners on the night winning 4-1 over Rangers.

Barca draws blank against Valencia

Tuesday, 20th October 2009 1:48pm
One of the most interesting results from La Liga after round 6 was without a doubt Valencia managing to stop Barcelona from scoring in a match for the first time this season.

It was also the first time this season that Barca had dropped points after winning the first six matches.

Real Madrid went back to winning ways after beating Valladolid 4-2.

Another big news was Xerez winning its first match of the season.

The losers in that match, Villareal are now the only team without a win in Spanish Primera division.

Monday, 19th October 2009 1:23pm
Ten-men Adelaide United beat Sydney FC 2-1 and with that loss Sydney ended in second spot as the Gold Coast overcame an in-form Perth Glory side to reclaim top spot.

With that win Adelaide moved into sixth position and this was aided by Brisbane Roar losing 3-nil to the Central Coast Mariners who maintained their fifth position.

The Glory slipped to fourth position.

Things stayed the same at the bottom with North Queensland Fury getting yet another draw against Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets losing.

The draw for Wellington Phoenix means that the Phoenix becomes the first team in the A-League to have six consecutive draws and this week I will show the updated recent form. Next week I will show the full form table.

Farina, Roar part ways

Thursday, 15th October 2009 9:46pm
Brisbane Roar parted ways with coach Frank Farina after he was charged with drink driving for the second time.

Farina joined the Roar in November 2006 and under him the team played 67 A-League matches winning 28 of them.

The Roar will be the first team this season to sack its coach.

So here is the record for Farina's 67 matches(that includes the match in round 10):

Away wins 14
Home wins 14
Goals scored 98
Goals conceded 81

So it was a fairly successful stint with the team winning more matches than it lost.

Wednesday, 14th October 2009 1:30pm
Brisbane Roar and the Central Coast Mariners currently sit in the last two finals places and in round 11 the two battle it out to maintain those positions.

A win can take the Mariners to fourth place provided Melbourne Victory does not get a result against Newcastle Jets.

A win for the Roar will take them above the Mariners and possibly fourth if the Victory lose or draw against the Jets.

Gold Coast back to winning ways

Monday, 12th October 2009 1:57pm
Gold Coast United went back to winning ways after beating Brisbase 1-nil at the Suncorp Stadium in round 10.

Round 10 of the A-League had four matches after the Wellington Phoenix/Newcastle Jets match was postponed because of New Zealand playing Bahrain in 2010 World Cup qualifying match.

The other winners in this round were Sydney FC who beat Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory who beat Adelaide United.

Sydney FC scored three goals in five minutes in the first half to secure its top position on the ladder.

Glory's win pushed the team to second with Gold Coast securing second position on goal difference.

The only draw of the round saw North Queensland Fury saw a late goal to level scores against Central Coast Mariners who had scored in the first minute of the match.

This week I take a look at the recent form for the A-League teams.

Pompey gets first win

Tuesday, 6th October 2009 1:19pm
A lot happened in round 8 of the English Premier League but one of the key results was Portsmouth winning its first match for the 2009/10 season.

Pompey had gone 8 without getting a single point and the three points against Wolves means the team is just two points away from West Ham and four points behind Birmingham, Fulham, Blackburn and Wolves.

In theory two consecutive wins could see Pompey go as high as 13th. Pompey next four fixtures are against Tottenham, Hull, Stoke and Wigan.

Looking at the top of the ladder, Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-nil to inflict Liverpool's third defeat of the season. Last season Liverpool lost just two matches - both away - and had 11 draws.

To put the current state into that same context it will be like two losses and three draws so far.

Looking back below is the final table for for the 2008/9 season for the top four teams.

P W D L F A GD P
1 Man United 38 28 6 4 68 24 44 90
2 Liverpool 38 25 11 2 77 27 50 86
3 Chelsea 38 25 8 5 68 24 44 83
4 Arsenal 38 20 12 6 68 37 31 72

So Liverpool lost the fewest matches of the top four teams and Arsenal had the most draws with 12 although Liverpool were a close 11.

Manchester United drew the least with just six draws and none so far this season.

Sydney shoots to the top

Tuesday, 6th October 2009 1:13pm
Sydney FC shot to the top of the A-League ladder after beating the Central Coast Mariners 1-nil at home in round 9.

With Gold Coast United only managing a goalless draw in its match against Wellington Phoenix, Sydney took advantage of that to take pole position.

The next match for Sydney FC will be away to Melbourne Victory who got their first home win against Brisbane Roar.

There were no changes in the bottom six places with none of the teams occupying those places managing a win.

The North Queensland Fury still anchor the ladder after a draw against high flying Perth Glory.

After looking at the home ladder last week, this week I take a look at the away ladder:

TeamPlayedWonDrawLostForAgainstGDPts
Melbourne Victory 4 3 01 74 39
Gold Coast 5 2 12 77 07
Perth Glory 5 2 03 77 06
NQ Fury 5 1 31 610 -46
Brisbane Roar 4 1 21 86 25
Adelaide Utd 3 1 11 32 14
Sydney 4 1 12 45 -14
Central Coast Mariners 5 1 13 23 -14
Newcastle Jets 5 0 32 47 -33
Wellington Phoenix 5 0 32 47 -33

So the Victory the away ladder after three victories away from home and just one loss.

At this stage of the season the Phoenix and the Jets are the poorest travellers with no wins but just three draws.

Sevilla ends Real's unbeaten run

Monday, 5th October 2009 1:24pm
Real Madrid's unbeaten run in the Spanish Primera came to an end after the team lost 2-1 away to Sevilla.

Real's defeat means that only Barcelona remain undefeated in La Liga at this stage after Barcelona got a narrow victory over Almeria.

Looking at teams towards the bottom of the ladder, Atletico Madrid got its first win of the season after beating Real Zaragoza 2-1.

The only teams without a win now are Villareal and Xerex.

With Barcelona scoring just one goal and Real Madrid losing, its not surprising to see that round 6 saw the lowest goal tally so far. Only 23 goals were scored and so far round 3 has the highest number with 39 scored.

This week I will take a week at the trends for the 47 matches so far that have ended with a winner.

TrendFrequencyPercentage(%)
Home team leading at half time, home team winning at full time 1736.2
Away team leading at half time, away team winning at full time 1327.7
Home team trailing at half time, home team winning at full time 24.3
Away team trailing at half time, away team winning at full time 00.0
Draw at half time, home team winning at full time 1123.4
Draw at half time, away team winning at full time 48.5
Matches ending in result 4778.3

So basically no away team losing at half time has managed to come back and win the match.

FC Zurich stun AC Milan

Thursday, 1st October 2009 1:47pm
FC Zurich got an unlikely away win after beating former champions AC Milan 1-nil at the San Siro in the UEFA Champions League.

FC Zurich was one of only two away teams to win on the second day of match day 2.

Chelsea was the other one with a similar scoreline against Apoel Nicosia.

Less goals were scored in this round compared to the first one with a total of 35 but the pattern of more goals in the second half continued.

12 goals were scored in the first half compared to 23 in the second. Infact in todays matches only three first half goals were scored.

This week we take a look at the scorelines in the Champions League so far in the table below:

ScorelineFrequency
0 - 0 3
0 - 1 3
0 - 3 1
0 - 4 1
1 - 0 5
1 - 1 5
1 - 2 1
1 - 4 1
2 - 0 5
2 - 1 2
2 - 3 1
2 - 5 1
3 - 0 1
3 - 1 2

So from the table 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0 are the most popular score lines so far.
