Bright start for Atletico

Tuesday, 31st August 2010 11:09pm
Atletico Madrid started the 2010/11 season with a massive win over Sporting Gijon.

Atletico who beat Inter Milan in the UEFA Super Cup three days earlier, scored two goals in each half to start the season with a high scoring win.

It wasn't a good start for rivals Real who were held goalless by Real Mallorca.

Defending champions Barcelona started with a 3-nil win over Real Santander.

Sevilla were the other team to score four goals as they overcame newly promoted Levante 4-1.

Real appoint Mourinho

Monday, 31st May 2010 10:31pm
Real Madrid has appointed former Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho to replace Manuel Pellegrini.

Mourinho's Inter achieved last season after winning the Coppa Italia, Serie A and the UEFA Champions League and Real must be expecting the same next season.

Real had a good season but just fell short as Barcelona beat them in both their league matches and Real under Mourinho will need to change that in order to win La Liga.

Real were also knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon in the round of 16.

Below is the head-to-head stats between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the 2009/10 season:

Pellegrini's Real - trend analysis

Friday, 28th May 2010 1:37pm
Manuel Pellegrini may have been sacked by Real Madrid but his team proved to be one with one of the best defences in the top European leagues.

Real did not concede more than two goals in any league match. Barcelona is the only other team to achieve that compared with teams from Serie A, English Premiership and the Ligue 1.

Here is a look at the winning trend comparing the half time score with the full time score:

TrendFrequencyPercentage(%)
Real Madrid leading at half time, Real Madrid winning at full time 1954.3
Real Madrid leading at half time, Real Madrid losing at full time 00.0
Real Madrid trailing at half time, Real Madrid winning at full time 25.7
Real Madrid trailing at half time, Real Madrid losing at full time 38.6
Real Madrid drawing at half time, Real Madrid winning at full time 1028.6
Real Madrid drawing at half time, Real Madrid losing at full time 12.9
Matches ending in result 3592.1

Real drew three matches :

TrendFrequencyPercentage
Real Madrid drawing at half time, Real Madrid drawing at full time 266.7
Real Madrid team leading at half time, Real Madrid drawing at full time 00.0
Real Madrid trailing at half time, Real Madrid drawing at full time 133.3
Drawn matches 37.9

So when the new Real Madrid coach starts, supposedly Jose Mourinho, he will probably have to do better than Pellegrini.

Real sack Pellegrini

Thursday, 27th May 2010 1:56pm
Real Madrid has sacked its coach Manuel Pellegrini after one season in charge at the Bernabeau.

Real's Pellegrini finished second on the table behind champions Barcelona but that wasn't enough to save the coach's job.

Real lost four matches last season including two to Barcelona. A draw in the last match of the season made the team finish three points behind the leaders.

Last round : Malaga vs Real Madrid

Saturday, 15th May 2010 12:00am
Second place Real Madrid will play an away match against Malaga in the last round knowing that victory will at least keep them in the hunt for the title.

Real currently trails rivals Barcelona by a point and to win the title the champions must fail to win its last fixture while Real win its tie.

A Barca win will make sure they will retain the title.

Malaga are currently fifth from the bottom and there is a chance that they could be results. A win will guarantee their safety irrespective of whatever happens in other matches.

Malaga's home form is not that impressive having won only five matches at home so far this season. On the other hand Real has lost three matches away from the Bernabeau and their away form is the second in the league.

Last round : Barcelona vs Valladolid

Friday, 14th May 2010 11:47pm
In the last round of La Liga defending champions and current league leaders Barcelona play Valladolid knowing that a win will land them another title.

Barca plays its last match at home where it has not lost a single match and the only blemish there being draw. On the other hand their opponents have only won three matches away from home.

If other results don't go their way Valladolid could be relegated and therefore they have all to play for against the champions.

There is a 60 point difference between the two teams and in their earlier match this season Barca won 3-nil.

Second placed Real Madrid will play at the same time as Barca waiting for a Barca slip up.

Mallorca face Real challenge

Tuesday, 4th May 2010 7:48pm
Mallorca are sitting in fourth place and in the midweek round 36 of the Primera Division they face Real Madrid who are themselves battling for the title.

Mallorca has been the surprise team of the season and are at the moment two points ahead of fifth placed Sevilla and a win over Real Madrid will make them stay in that position at the end of the round.

Mallorca can still finish as high as third because Valencia in third place at the moment are six points away with three matches left to play.

Real Madrid cannot afford to slip at this late stage of the season and a victory will mean they will keep on track in their Barcelona chase.

Top vs bottom : Barca vs Xerez

Friday, 23rd April 2010 1:59pm
In La Liga round 32, league ladders Barcelona will play bottom club Xerez in a match that looks more like a mismatch.

There is a 57 point difference between the two teams and Barca has scored 50 more goals than Xerez.

But its not a complete mismatch if the previous match between the two teams is to be considered. In that match Barca won 2-nil.

Xerez started their season badly but lately they have been picking up points here and there.

However, Barcelona has the second best home form in the competition and has so far dropped two points out of its home matches and this is likely going to continue.

Real reduces gap to one point

Tuesday, 20th April 2010 12:10am
Real Madrid reduced the gap with to just one point after beating Valencia 2-nil at the Bernabeau.

Barcelona were held goalless by Espanyol and this was only the second match of the season for Barca to fail to find the net in a match.

With Real losing out on head to head against Barca, they will need to finish with more points than Barca to win the title and the win over Valencia helps them in that regard.

Valencia are still in third place but face the threat from Sevilla and Mallorca for that position.

Sevilla won its match against Sporting Gijon and Mallorca will play the last fixture of the round against Osasuna.

In relegation matters, Tenerife won its match against Getafe whilst Xerez and Valladolid could only draw their matches.

Mallorca reduces Valencia gap

Tuesday, 13th April 2010 11:00pm
In La Liga's round 31, all eyes were on the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona but one other key match was between Mallorca and Valencia.

Mallorca is currently in fifth place and they beat third placed Valencia 3-2 to reduce the gap to just four points.

Whilst Real and Barca have already secured the top two places third and fourth places are not yet decided and three teams Valencia, Sevilla and Mallorca are vying for those two places.

Athletico Bilbao in sixth could also be in the picture but they are currently eight points behind Valencia.

So Mallorca's win over Valencia was critical and with seven matches to go the surprise packets of this year's season have a good chance of snatching a Champions League place.

In the Real/Barca match, Real suffered its first home loss and for the first time failed to score at home this season in a league match.

Real has failed to score against Barcelona and this was only the fifth match this season that Real has failed to score in a match.

Looking at the bottom, Xerez's good run came to a stop after losing 1-nil at home to Getafe. The good run has made sure that Xerez are now just two points adrift from the team second from the bottom.

This week I will take a quick look at the winning trend in La Liga this season so far:

Real, Barca face off in title battle

Friday, 9th April 2010 8:41pm
In La Liga's round 31, giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in a match that could well decide the destination of the title.

La Liga uses head-to-head to determine table placings in the event of a points tie and in their first match earlier in the season Barca won 1-nil.

Real will need to win this tie to get even on head-to-head should the two teams finish on the same number of points at the end of the season.

Real and Barca are so much ahead of the other teams with third placed Valencia on 56 points and 21 points behind and therefore the two teams have virtually secured the top two places.

In the last round Real won 2-nil away to Racing Santander and that was the first time since January for the team to fail to score three goals or more in a league match.

Barca has the best defence in the league at the moment having conceded just 19 goals.

This showdown sees the team with the best home form play the team with the best away form.

Madrid derby: Atletico face high flying Real

Sunday, 28th March 2010 2:47pm
In La Liga's round 29, Real Madrid will face city rivals Atletico Madrid as Real battles for the title.

This will be Real's second Madrid derby in a week having played Getafe in a midweek fixture.

Real has double the number of points their city rivals have at the moment and a win will increase the gap even further.

Its more than two months now since Real failed to score three or more goals in a league match.

Atletico's away record is far from impressive at the moment and you have to go back to January for the last time Atletico won an away match. That was a 4-nil over Valladolid.

In their previous match this season, Real just managed to edge out Atletico 3-2.

Real continue scoring spree

Thursday, 4th March 2010 11:41pm
Real Madrid are in top form at the moment having scored eleven goals in their last two matches.

In the last five matches Real has scored a minimum of three goals each match and its total goals for the season stands at 64 so far.

It looks likely that the number will reach 100 if the current form persists.

Real leads the lowest scorers in the league by 50 goals. Xerez has only scored 14 goals so far after 24 matches.

Round 24 : Sevilla vs Bilbao

Saturday, 27th February 2010 10:50pm
In La Liga's round 24, Sevilla will host Athletic Bilbao as the teams fight for places in Europe next season.

Sevilla is currently in fourth place on the table, four points behind Valencia in third place.

Athletic is six points behind Sevilla and a win here will mean the gap will just be three points.

Looking at recent form, Sevilla has lost two matches in the last six league matches it has played whilst their rivals this weekend have lost three.

The two teams have both drawn just thrice so far this season but none in the last six matches.

At home Sevilla has won seven matches out of 12 and losing just two for a total of 24 points.

On the road Athletic has won four but lost six matches and drawn the other two.

Valencia faces Getafe test

Saturday, 20th February 2010 9:11pm
The last fixture of La Liga's round 23 will see Valencia face Getafe as Valencia tries to cement its position in the top three.

In the last round Valencia could only manage a one-all draw against Sporting Gijon but this time the match is being played at home.

Getafe also had a draw in its last match against Almeria and a win will be crucial at the Mestalla in order to keep in contention of the Europa League places.

So far Valencia has lost just once at home but the team has also drawn four times at the Mestalla.

Out of eleven matches away, Getafe has won just three and lost the other eight and so its away record is not as impressive.

Looking at the last six matches Valencia has won three, drawn two and lost one whilst Getafa has won just won once, drawn twice and lost three.

Its interesting to note that in their previous encounter this season, Getafe won 3-1 but their season has not been consistent since then.

Barca suffer first loss

Monday, 15th February 2010 11:57pm
Barcelona suffered their first loss in the league this season when Atletico Madrid won 2-1 in round 22 of the Spanish Primera Division.

Barcelona had gone 21 matches unbeaten in the league but the two first half goals were enough for Atletico to register a shock win.

The loss means that Barca's lead at the top is reduced to just two points after Real Madrid won its away match against bottom side Xerez 3-nil with all goals scored in the second half.

Sporting Gijon held Valencia to a one-all draw which means that Valencia now trail Real by 10 points.

Valencia now has a four point lead over Sevilla in fourth place. Sevilla had a narrow 1-nil win over Osasuna.

In a key match insofar as relegation is concerned, Valladolid managed to hold Real Zaragoza to a one-all draw a result which suited Zaragoza more as they keep out of the relegation zone.

There is still one more match to be played between Tenerife and Mallorca.

Zaragoza too good for Sevilla

Tuesday, 9th February 2010 1:13pm
After beating Valencia in round 20 of La Liga, Sevilla lost 2-1 to relegation threatened Real Zaragoza in round 21.

With Real Mallorca winning against Villareal the loss meant that Sevilla slipped back to fifth on the ladder in what was the most surprising result of the weekend.

Valencia had a 2-nil over Valladolid and therefore cemented their third place on the ladder where they trail Real Madrid in second place by 8 points and Barcelona in first by 13 points.

Real Madrid scored its half-century of goals in this round as well in the 3-nil against Espanyol to maintain the the 5 point gap behind Barcelona.

Xerex were leading at half-time against Athletic Bilbao but conceded two goals in the second half to lose 3-2 and so the team still anchors the table.

Zaragoza's win meant they went out of the relegation zone to be replaced by Valladolid.

51 matches out of 210 have finished in draws so far in La Liga and so below I will show the drawing trend:

Sevilla won the crunch match against Valencia in round 20 of the Spanish Primera division to move to fourth position on the table.

Sevilla won 2-1 to be within three points of their rivals. This has been a big turnaround for a team that had lost three matches in a row in January.

Once again there were no changes at the top as both Barcelona and Real Madrid won. Barca had an uncharacteristic 1-nil win over Sporting Gijon whilst Real Madrid dispatched Real Zaragoza 3-1.

Bottom club Xerez had a surprise win over Malaga despite trailing 1-nil at half time.

This was Xerez's only second win of the season and the club now has 11 points, six adrift of Tenerife which is second from bottom position.

Xerez is only the fifth team to be trailing at half time to win the match at full time as the table below shows:

Sevilla faces Valencia challenge

Friday, 29th January 2010 6:01pm
Round 20 of the Spanish Primera Division will see Sevilla face the challenge from Valencia who are currently third on the La Liga table whilst the hosts are sixth.

A few weeks before Christmas Sevilla were themselves in third place and challenging the top two teams but a string of four consecutive losses have left them in sixth place.

Whilst Sevilla lost form, on the other hand Valencia picked up their form and have lost just once in their last six matches.

A win or a loss will not change Valencia's league position but a win will help close or maintain the gap between themselves and Real Madrid and Barcelona.

A win for Sevilla could see them rise as high as fourth and more importantly will reduce the gap with their opponents to just three points.

In their first meeting this season Valencia came 2-nil winners.

Here are some of the stats for the two teams so far this season:

Tenerife holds Valencia's run

Tuesday, 26th January 2010 2:26pm
In La Liga's round 19, Tenerife managed a goalless draw against in-form Valencia.

Valencia was going for its fourth win in a row but relegation Tenerife managed to salvage a draw that gave it a valuable point and avoid the relegation places.

The bottom two teams both lost in round 19 with Real Zaragoza losing 4-2 to Villareal and Xerez at home losing 2-1 to Osasuna.

At the top, Barcelona continued with its winning run with a 3-nil over Valladolid. This was the third match in a row with Barcelona keeping a clean sheet. Out of 19 matches, Barca has kept 11 clean sheets in the league.

Real Madrid won 2-nil with two first half goals against Malaga. This was a welcome return to winning ways for Real after losing to Athletic Bilbao in the last round.

In the Madrid derby Atletico Madrid came short after losing 1-nil to Getafe.

Below is the current form table and its no surprise that Barcelona are at the top:

Derby day as Getafe face Atletico

Friday, 22nd January 2010 5:37pm
Its another derby in Madrid this weekend with Getafe facing the in-form Atletico Madrid in round 19 of the Spanish La Liga.

Getafe and Atletico are just separated by four points with Getafe on top and that is because Atletico had a bad start to the season.

However, in the last few weeks Atletico has found its feet again and now lies third on the form table with 13 points from the last six matches. This is the same number of points as Real Madrid over that period.

Getafe on the other hand has won three matches out of the last six and more importantly it has lost the last two matches to Sporting Gijon and Malaga. Both losses were 1-nil away losses.

The other loss from the last six was also an away match to Villareal but this week Getafe is home.

Here are some of the stats for the two teams as they enter derby day:

Zaragoza, Xerez in stalemate

Tuesday, 19th January 2010 5:36am
The two bottom clubs in La Liga could only draw in round 18 of La Liga after Real Zaragoza and Xerez played out a goalless draw.

Zaragoza and Xerez are separated by six points and this was a real chance for Xerez to close that gap but the draw meant the spoils were shared and the gap remained six points.

The other team in the relegation zone Tenerife also a managed a one-all draw against Almeria and so stays two points ahead of Zaragoza.

At the top of the table, Barcelona has increased its lead at the top to five points following its 4-nil thrashing of Sevilla and Real Madrid's loss to Athletic Bilbao.

The Barca match was goalless going into half time but after the break Barca scored four to be just four goals shy of a half century of goals this season.

Valencia increased its grip on third place after a 4-1 win over Villareal. Valencia is now just three points behind Real Madrid and five points ahead of Mallorca in fourth.

Sevilla faces Barca challenge

Saturday, 16th January 2010 7:52am
Barcelona will play Sevilla in round 18 of La Liga after meeting the same team in a cup game in midweek. Barca the Copa del Roy match 1-nil.

Sevilla are on a poor run at the moment having lost their last three matches 2-1.

Before those three losses Sevilla had only lost twice in the league and were fourth on the table.

Barca are the form team with 16 points from their last six matches and scored 13 goals and conceded just two.

Depending on the other results a win for Sevilla will take them just one more place up whilst a loss could also drop see them drop one place.

A loss for Barca will mean losing top place if Real Madrid wins its match against Athletic Bilbao.

Here is some of the stats for Barcelona and Sevilla so far this season:

Barca demolish Tenerife to stay top

Monday, 11th January 2010 4:51pm
Barcelona came from their disappointing draw in the last round demolish Tenerife 5-0 away from home.

The win made sure that Barca maintained their two point cushion at the top of the La Liga table. This was Tenerife's second 5-nil loss of the season after losing by the same scoreline to Villareal earlier in the season.

Real Madrid won its home fixture against Mallorca 2-nil and they and Barcelona have each scored 42 goals so far this season.

Round 17 of the Spanish Primera division also saw a big win for Atletico Madrid who beat Valladolid 4 -nil. This is the second time Atletico has won by a four goal margin after also beating Espanyol 4-nil in November.

Sevilla's poor run of form continues after losing 2-1 at home to Racing Santander. Sevilla has lost by the same scoreline in the last three matches. Their next match will be away to Barcelona.

Sevilla has now slipped down to fifth place on the ladder after being overtaken by Deportivo La Coruna.

Nothing has changed at the bottom of the table with both Xerez and Real Zaragoza losing. Malaga coudl only salvage a draw.

At this stage of the season after 17 rounds I think it is interesting to take a look at the trends in terms of the result at half time compared to the result at full time:

TrendFrequencyPercentage(%)
Home team leading at half time, home team winning at full time 4535.2
Away team leading at half time, away team winning at full time 2922.7
Home team trailing at half time, home team winning at full time 43.1
Away team trailing at half time, away team winning at full time 10.8
Draw at half time, home team winning at full time 3325.8
Draw at half time, away team winning at full time 1612.5
Matches ending in result 12875.3

So only five teams have so far managed to turn around the result at half time and with only one away team managing to do so.

Mallorca home form faces Bilbao test

Friday, 1st January 2010 8:02am
Real Mallorca's unbeaten home record will face the test when the team plays Athletic Bilbao in La Liga's round 16.

Mallorca is one of only three teams still unbeaten at home. The other two are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

On the other hand Athletic Bilbao has only lost twice away from home and drawn just once. Its away record is a good as Real Madrid's.

The two teams are separated by just one point with Mallorca ahead at the moment and so a win for the visitors will see them go above the hosts on the table.

Stalemate at the Riazor

Monday, 21st December 2009 10:11pm
There was a stalemate at the Riazor as Valencia held Deportivo La Coruna to a goalless draw in round 15 of La Liga.

A win for the home side would have seen them up to fourth place but they will remain in sixth place.

With Seville losing 2-1 at home to Getafe a win for Valencia would have seen them regain third place but for now they will maintain fourth position going into the Christmas break.

Its interesting to see that none of the teams in positions third to sixth managed to secure three points and that has moved Athletico Bilbao nearer to the European places after their 2-nil win over Osasuna. Athletico is in seventh position.

There wasn't much change at the bottom with Xerez not in action having already played Barcelona earlier in the month but Malaga had a good win over Mallorca.

Real Zaragoza had a nightmare at the Bernabeau losing 6-nil to Real Madrid. Madrid were already 4-nil by half time and they scored a further two goals after the break.

This was the second match this season where a team has scored six goals and the sixth match were the winning team had scored five goals or more.

After taking a look at the goal margins after the last round, this week I will take a look at the scorelines after 150 matches so far in La Liga.

ScorelineFrequency

0 - 1 8
0 - 2 10

4 - 1 3
4 - 2 3
5 - 0 2
5 - 1 1

6 - 0 1

Interestingly the two most popular scorelines at the moment are 1-0 and 1-1 which have been the final score in 18 matches apiece.

14 matches have so far finished 2-1 in La Liga which is the third most popular scoreline.

Tenerife face Atletico test

Friday, 18th December 2009 9:02pm
Tenerife will face Atletico Madrid in round 15 of La Liga with a win vital for both teams as they try to rise up the table.

In their previous six matches, Atletico has accumulated six points from two wins whilst Tenerife has bagged five points from one win and two draws.

In round 14 both teams lost with Tenerife losing away to Getafe but Atletico lost a home fixture against Villarreal.

So one point separating the two teams at the moment this could be a very interesting fixture especially as Atletico now no longer has the distractions of European competition.

Sevilla regains third place as Valencia slips

Monday, 14th December 2009 9:40pm
Sevilla's narrow 1-nil win over Sporting Gijon made sure the team regained third place on the La Liga table.

In round 13 Valencia had taken over third place but Valencia lost 3-2 to Real Madrid at home to drop back to fourth place.

With both Barcelona and Real Madrid winning their matches there is no change at the top of the table. Barca beat Espanyol 1-nil and the loss was Espanyol's fifth in a row.

Taking a look at the other end of the table, Xerez still has one win this season after losing to Racing Santander and therefore remain anchored at the bottom of the table.

Malaga are second from the bottom despite not losing their last five matches. This was Malaga's fifth draw in a row.

This week I will take a look at goal winning margins in La Liga after 14 rounds. The table below shows the goal margins:

Goal MarginFrequency
0 34
1 55
2 27
3 16
4 6
5 3

So the most popular winning margin is one goal and only three matches have been lost by a five goal margin.

Valencia face Real challenge

Friday, 11th December 2009 6:11am
Third placed Valencia will face Real Madrid in round 14 of La Liga knowing that a win will take them into second place.

Valencia currently top the form ladder having collected 16 points from their last six matches whilst Real Madrid has picked up 13 and are third.

Also Valencia are still to lose at home and so this will be a real challenge for Valencia to keep their push for the title.

Sevilla are just one point behind Valencia and a Valencia slip up will see them back in third place assuming they win their away match against Sporting Gijon.

Valencia climb to third in La Liga

Monday, 7th December 2009 4:18pm
Valencia took advantage of Sevilla's second successive draw to go into third place in the Spanish Primera division.

Valencia played in the last fixture of round 13 knowing that a win would put them above Sevilla and they did that winning 3-1 against Athletic Bilbao.

For the second successive round Sevilla's match finished in a draw and this time the team was held by one all by Valladolid.

The top teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, both won to make sure there were no changes at the summit of La Liga.

Xerez lost again and this time the bottom team lost 2-nil to Atletico Madrid to remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder.

Malaga draw against Osasuna for its fourth successive draw and now sits just one point above Xerez.

After round 12 I looked at the home ladder and now its the turn of the away ladder:

TeamPlayedWonDrawLostForAgainstGDPts
Barcelona 8 5 30 154 1118
Valencia 7 6 01 157 818

Zaragoza 7 0 25 721 -142
Villarreal 6 0 15 611 -51
Tenerife 6 0 15 418 -141

So just like real ladder, Barcelona are on top where they are tied with Valencia who have also collected 18 points away from home.

At this point Tenerife and Villareal have the worst away record having just picked a point from their travels.

Barca regain top spot after Real victory

Monday, 30th November 2009 11:51pm
Barcelona regained its top position in the Spanish Primera Division after beating arch-rivals Real Madrid 1-nil at the Nou Camp.

Barca were on top until the last round when a draw meant that Real overtook them but with the win over Real Barca now has a two point advantage.

With both Sevilla and Valencia drawing their matches Barca has now increased its lead its on the two teams to four and five points respectively.

Sevilla drew its home match against Malaga and it had to come from behind to snatch that point in a 2-all draw.

Also Valencia were held one all at home by Mallorca to record its fourth draw at home.

On the other end of the table, Xerez lost 5-1 away to Getafe to remain bottom of the table.

With Barca winning at home this week and maintaining its 100% home record, I will take a look at the home ladder which compares teams only on the matches played at home.

After the next round I will take a look at the La Liga away ladder

So here is the home ladder so far this season:

TeamPlayedWonDrawLostForAgainstGDPts
Barcelona 6 6 00 205 1518
Real Madrid 6 6 00 184 1418
Mallorca 6 6 00 162 1418
Sevilla 6 4 20 136 714
Sporting Gijon 6 4 20 82 614
Deportivo La Coruña 6 4 11 85 313
Getafe 6 4 02 127 512
Villarreal 6 3 21 137 611
Valencia 6 2 40 106 410
Zaragoza 6 3 12 96 310
Tenerife 6 3 12 76 110
Athletic Bilbao 6 3 12 79 -210
Atletico 6 2 31 128 49
Osasuna 6 2 22 77 08
Almeria 6 2 22 69 -38
Espanyol 6 2 22 58 -38
Valladolid 6 1 32 109 16
Xerez 6 1 23 38 -55
Málaga 6 1 14 68 -24
R Santander 6 0 15 313 -101

So Real Santander is the only team without a home win so far this season.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Mallorca, Sevilla, Sporting Gijon and Valencia are still to lose at home but Valencia has just had two wins at home and hence its lower down on this ladder.

Real, Barca fight for top spot

Thursday, 26th November 2009 5:58pm
Real Madrid and Barcelona are separated by just one point going into the first league match this season between the two teams in round 12 of the Spanish Primera Division.

The La Liga positions are determined using the head-to-head considerations and so this match is very important for both teams as they will all be vying for a win in case points are tied at the end of the season.

Barca are still to lose a match in the league so far this season whilst Real has lost once but its the three draws that have made sure that Barca trail their major rivals by a point at this stage.

So here are a few of the stats for the two teams going into this clash of the giants match:

Real reclaim top spot after Barca draw

Monday, 23rd November 2009 11:45pm
Real Madrid reclaimed top spot in the Spanish Primera Division after Barcelona were held to a one-all draw by Athletic Bilbao.

Real's 1-nil win over Real Santander was enough to secure top spot going into the top of the table clash at Nou Camp in round 12.

Sevilla and Valencia are not far off in third and fourth places respectively after wins in their respective matches.

Sevilla won 2-1 away to Tenerife whilst Valencia won 3-1 away to Osasuna in the last match of the round 11.

There has been 27 drawn matches after 11 rounds and so this week I will take a look at the draws table:

TeamPlayedGoals ForPoints
Sporting Gijon 11 45
Atletico Madrid 11 64
Espanyol 11 34
Racing Santander 11 64
Valladolid 11 14
Xerez 11 14
Almeria 11 43
Barcelona 11 23
Málaga 11 43
Osasuna 11 33
Real Zaragoza 11 43
Valencia 11 43
Villarreal 11 43
Athletic Bilbao 11 12
Mallorca 11 22
Deportivo La Coruña 11 11
Real Madrid 11 01
Sevilla 11 01
Tenerife 11 21
Getafe 11 00

So Sporting Gijon has had the highest number of draws with 5 and Getafe is still to have a drawn match.

Real edge out Atletico

Monday, 9th November 2009 1:53pm
Real Madrid won the Madrid derby overcoming city rivals Atletico Madrid 3-2.

At one time Real were three goals up but Atletico scored two late goals to bring upon some decency on the scoreline in front of their home fans.

Barcelona were the only team to score more than three goals in this round winning 4-2 against Mallorca.

Sevilla and Valencia also scored three goals in their matches to win against Villareal and Real Zaragoza respectively.

I think its a good time now to look at the La Liga form ladder and see which teams are hot and which ones are not.

Below is the Spanish Primera division form ladder based on the results of the last six matches:

Atletico face Real in Madrid derby

Thursday, 5th November 2009 9:52pm
Round 10 of Spanish Primera Division will see Atletico Madrid face city rivals Real Madrid in the Madrid derby.

Atletico finished last season in the Champions League places but this season has started badly and the team is in the relegation zone with just seven points to its name.

On the other hand Real is in second position trailing leaders Barcelona by just one point.

So the match would look like a no contest but this is a derby match and it could be a very interesting result.

So here are some of the stats for the two teams so far in the league:

Villareal tame Tenerife

Monday, 2nd November 2009 7:42pm
Villareal had a massive win over Tenerife after beating the promoted side 5-nil at home in round 8 of La Liga.

This is Villareal's second win of the season after winning its first match in the last round. Villareal had failed to register a win in the first seven rounds of the season.

Barcelona drew away and its lead at the top has now been reduced to just one point.

Barca looked set to grab all three points but Osasuna scored in the last minute of the match.

Real Madrid has now closed the gap at the top to just one point after winning its match against Getafe 2-nil.

Mallorca continues to impress with another win and this time a 1-nil win over Racing Santander to keep fifth place.

After taking a look at the first half table last week, this week lets take a look at the second half table. This just considers the result for the last 45 minutes of the match and here it is:

Almeria 9 1 53 37 - 48
Athletic Bilbao 9 1 35 38 -56

So here Real Madrid leads and in third place not surprising is Mallorca.

Zaragoza hosts Almeria after mauling

Friday, 30th October 2009 10:45pm
Real Zaragoza will host Almeria in round 9 of the Spanish Primera League after losing 6-1 to Barcelona in the previous round.

I think this will be a match for Zaragoza to show that the Barca match was just a blip.

Almeria lost their last match at home 3-nil to Valencia and I think they also have a point to prove after losing by such a margin at home.

Almeria are currently 12th and Zaragoza are three places back in 15th.

Sporting Gijon holds Real

Monday, 26th October 2009 11:20pm
Real Madrid failed to score in a league match for the first time this season after being held to a goalless draw by Sporting Gijon.

The draw means that Real stay in second place and now trail Barcelona by three points after eight rounds.

Barca had a goals fest beating Real Zaragoza 6-1 at home with three goals scored in each half.

This round also the saw the away teams score just seven goals which equal lowest with the goals scored by away teams in round 1.

Villareal won for the first time this season by beating Malaga 2-1. They were the only team without left without a win in La Liga.

So this week I will take a look at the second half ladder which considers only the result from the second half of the match.

TeamPlayedWonDrawLostForAgainstGDPts
Real Madrid 8 4 40 133 1016
Barcelona 8 4 40 93 616

Almeria 8 1 43 37 -47
Xerez 8 1 34 210 -86

Interestingly Real and Barca are tied at the top on this with similar records but Real have a superior second half goal difference.

Mallorca is not far way back in third place.

Friday, 23rd October 2009 11:51pm
Atletico Madrid has sacked their coach Abel Resino after an indifferent start to the season.

The team finished last season on a high and hence the Champions League placing but after seven matches the team has just won one match in the league.

In the Champions League Atletico is also struggling with only a draw to its name after three matches.

Barca draws blank against Valencia

Tuesday, 20th October 2009 1:48pm
One of the most interesting results from La Liga after round 6 was without a doubt Valencia managing to stop Barcelona from scoring in a match for the first time this season.

It was also the first time this season that Barca had dropped points after winning the first six matches.

Real Madrid went back to winning ways after beating Valladolid 4-2.

Another big news was Xerez winning its first match of the season.

The losers in that match, Villareal are now the only team without a win in Spanish Primera division.

This week I will take a look at the first half ladder. This would be how the ladder would look if we consider just the first 45 minutes and after round 8 I will take a look at the second half ladder:

Sevilla ends Real's unbeaten run

Monday, 5th October 2009 1:24pm
Real Madrid's unbeaten run in the Spanish Primera came to an end after the team lost 2-1 away to Sevilla.

Real's defeat means that only Barcelona remain undefeated in La Liga at this stage after Barcelona got a narrow victory over Almeria.

Looking at teams towards the bottom of the ladder, Atletico Madrid got its first win of the season after beating Real Zaragoza 2-1.

The only teams without a win now are Villareal and Xerex.

With Barcelona scoring just one goal and Real Madrid losing, its not surprising to see that round 6 saw the lowest goal tally so far. Only 23 goals were scored and so far round 3 has the highest number with 39 scored.

This week I will take a week at the trends for the 47 matches so far that have ended with a winner.

TrendFrequencyPercentage(%)
Home team leading at half time, home team winning at full time 1736.2
Away team leading at half time, away team winning at full time 1327.7
Home team trailing at half time, home team winning at full time 24.3
Away team trailing at half time, away team winning at full time 00.0
Draw at half time, home team winning at full time 1123.4
Draw at half time, away team winning at full time 48.5
Matches ending in result 4778.3

So basically no away team losing at half time has managed to come back and win the match.

Spanish La Liga tipping competition

Friday, 4th September 2009 10:43pm
TipsChallenge will for the first time run a tipping competition for the Spanish La Liga this season.

There has been so much interest in La Liga following the overhaul at Real Madrid which saw the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka among others and therefore it should be very interesting trying to predict what happens in La Liga each round.

Although Barcelona and Real Madrid stand out as the strongest teams in La Liga, the Spanish Premier League is a very competitive league with lots of surprises each season.

From time to time there will be goal comparisons on this blog between La Liga and the English Premiership.
