A-League set for 10 teams

Saturday, 26th July 2008 6:47am
The A-League could potentially increase to ten teams after the Football Federation Australia (FFA) gave a provisional licence to the North Queensland Football club.

That will mean five matches per round instead of the current four with the Gold Coast United being the other team to join the league in the 2009/10 season.

If the current format of teams playing each other three times continues, this will mean a 27 match round season which will mean more matches to tip on TispChallenge.

Wednesday, 2nd July 2008 11:53pm
A total of 77 goals were scored in the just ended Euro 2008 tournament with Spain's David Villa being the top goal-scorer with four goals.

This is the exact number of goals scored as at Euro 2004 and the second highest. Euro 2000 still holds the record for the highest number of goals scored with 85. Far less were scored in England in 1996 with just 64.

Only two matched were decided by a penalty and one of them involved the eventual winners Spain who beat Italy on penalties and the other one was the Turkey/Croatia match.

Of the 77 goals scored, 25 were scored in the first half with 52 scored in the second half.

The table below shows how much each team contributed to the 77 goals tally and it also shows how many goals were scored in each half.

Team Matches First Half Second Half Total Goals
Spain 6 4 8 12
Germany 6 4 6 10
Netherlands 4 3 7 10
Turkey 5 1 7 8
Portugal 4 2 5 7
Russia 5 2 5 7
Croatia 4 2 3 5
Czech Republic 3 2 2 4
Italy 4 1 2 3
Sweden 3 1 2 3
Switzerland 3 1 2 3
Austria 3 0 1 1
France 3 0 1 1
Greece 3 1 0 1
Poland 3 1 0 1
Romania 3 0 1 1

So nearly two thirds of the goals were scored in the second half were 52 goals were goals were scored compared to first half's 25.

Turkey in particular scored 8 goals and only one of those goals was in the first half and that was in the semi-final match against Germany.
