EPL, La Liga, Serie A compared

Wednesday, 23rd May 2012 1:23pm
Now that the 2011/12 league season is finished in Europe we can compare some of the stats in the leagues with 380 league matches per season.

The English Premier League, La Liga and Serie A have each team playing 38 matches and therefore these leagues can be compared.

The German Bundesliga being an 18 team league has each team playing 34 matches.

Here is some of the stats for the three leagues:

EPL La Liga Serie A
Matches played380380380
Home wins171188171
Home wins % 45.049.545.0
Away wins1169897
Away wins % 30.525.825.5
Drawn9394112
Drawn % 24.524.729.5
Goalless draws273345
Goalless draws %7.18.711.8
Goals 10661049967
Goals/game 2.82.82.5
First half goals459446402
First half goals %43.142.541.6
Second half goals607603565
Second half goals %56.957.558.4
Home team goals 604637563
Home team goals % 56.760.758.2
Away team goals 462412404
Away team goals % 43.339.341.8

So the most goals were scored in the EPL with 1066 goals and the least goals in Serie A with 967.

Although the highest scoring team came from La Liga( Real Madrid with 121 goals) the other teams did not score as many goals and hence fewer goals than the EPL.

La Liga had two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona score more than a hundred goals.

Barca scored a total 114 goals.

The highest scoring team in Serie A was AC Milan with 74 goals and in the EPL Manchester City scored 94 goals.

The lowest scoring team from the three leagues was from Serie A with relegated Cesena scoring only 24 goals.

No team scored less than 30 goals in the EPL with Stoke City scoring 36 goals.

La Liga's lowest scoring team was relegated Real Santander who scored 29 goals.

Its interesting to see that in both Serie A and La Liga the lowest scoring team got relegated but in the EPL but in the EPL Stoke scored the least and way above relegation.

Also in Serie A the team that scored the most goals did not win the league but did so in both the EPL and La Liga.

In all three leagues there were more goals in the second half than first half and there was a higher percentage of home team goals compared to away team goals.
