Uruguay nets 15th Copa title
Uruguay made history by being the first team in South America to win the Copa America title 15 times when they beat Paraguay 3-nil in the final.
Uruguay were helped by two first half goals which were the first goals Paraguay had conceded in open play in the knockout phase.
Paraguay had reached the final having failed to win a match in open play and also having failed to score a single goal outside the group phase.
But once Uruguay scored they had to score but the could not find the net and finished the tournament as runners-up.
Interestingly, if you put all teams in a log table with all matches the teams played and just consider open play results, Paraguay finishes in the bottom half of the table as shown below:
Team | Played | Won | Draw | Lost | For | Against | GD | Pts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Uruguay | 6 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 9 | 3 | 6 | 12 |
Peru | 6 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 8 | 5 | 3 | 10 |
Venezuela | 6 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 7 | 8 | -1 | 9 |
Chile | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 7 |
Colombia | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 7 |
Argentina | 4 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 6 |
Brazil | 4 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 6 |
Paraguay | 6 | 0 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 8 | -3 | 5 |

The best team won. The attacking duo is amazing, we've watched some great football on Copa America. In fact, I think football won.
