Pompey gets first win

Tuesday, 6th October 2009 1:19pm
A lot happened in round 8 of the English Premier League but one of the key results was Portsmouth winning its first match for the 2009/10 season.

Pompey had gone 8 without getting a single point and the three points against Wolves means the team is just two points away from West Ham and four points behind Birmingham, Fulham, Blackburn and Wolves.

In theory two consecutive wins could see Pompey go as high as 13th. Pompey next four fixtures are against Tottenham, Hull, Stoke and Wigan.

Looking at the top of the ladder, Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-nil to inflict Liverpool's third defeat of the season. Last season Liverpool lost just two matches - both away - and had 11 draws.

To put the current state into that same context it will be like two losses and three draws so far.

Looking back below is the final table for for the 2008/9 season for the top four teams.

P W D L F A GD P
1 Man United 38 28 6 4 68 24 44 90
2 Liverpool 38 25 11 2 77 27 50 86
3 Chelsea 38 25 8 5 68 24 44 83
4 Arsenal 38 20 12 6 68 37 31 72

So Liverpool lost the fewest matches of the top four teams and Arsenal had the most draws with 12 although Liverpool were a close 11.

Manchester United drew the least with just six draws and none so far this season.

Thanks for the reminder for last season's ladder. As a Liverpool supporter it gives me hope because Man U lost 4 matches and drew 6 and still won the league. Liverpool has only lost three at the moment and no draws and the other teams will also lose some matches there is no doubt about that. Man U is still to play Chelsea for example and therefore as long as we don't lost beyond four matches there is hope I think.

Thanks Gavin, yes you are right that other teams will also lose some matches but maybe there is a concern that Liverpool has lost so many so early in the season. If you look at Man Utd, they actually dropped a total of 24 points last season which is an equivalent of 8 losses 0 draws and Liverpool is currently at 3 losses 0 draws. So its a long way to go to but it would be interesting to see how your team will perform against Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal.

For me the key matches for Liverpool are the ones against the two Manchester teams. If Liverpool can win those then that will go a very long way to securing the title. Last season ManU lost 4 matches and two of them were against Liverpool and I expect the same this season and then it will be a small case of taking care of Man city. Its still a long way to go.

Yes Bob, I agree Liverpool winning against Man United and Man City will be very important but I think that's also where the problem because it may not win those matches this season like it did last season. We will have to wait and see.
