World Cup Preview : South Africa
The 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts, South Africa will kick-off the tournament in a match against Mexico.
South Africa are hosting the tournament and therefore as hosts find themselves seeded in Group A.
The Bafana Bafana match against Mexico will go a long way in giving an indication of where they stand. That match could define their whole tournament.
Bafana Bafana missed the 2006 tournament having been to South Korea/Japan in 2002.
They have never been out of their group in two previous attempts but home advantage means that they may this time get enough points to reach the second round.
Apart from Mexico, the other teams in their group are 2006 finalists France and Uruguay.
This makes it a very tough group and its hard to see France not getting out of the group but a draw between France and Uruguay could be what South Africa wants assuming they win against Mexico.
A loss against Mexico will mean a very tough road ahead and so the hosts will need to settle quickly and treat the first match as a final.
South Africa's strongest weapon could be in their coach Carlos Alberto Parreira who has won the World Cup before and he was brave enough to drop local hero Benni McCarthy from the squad.
Parreira will therefore be hoping that his team will play more than three matches in this tournament.
