Chelsea cruise past Arsenal

Monday, 30th November 2009 9:58am
Chelsea extend its lead on the top of the ladder to five points after a 3-nil win over London rivals Arsenal.

That was the Gunners first loss at home this season and also for the first time this season the Gunners were kept goalless in front of their own supporters.

The Gunners slipped to fourth place on the ladder with Tottenham Hotspurs taking their place in third position following a one-all draw at Villa Park.

Defending champions Manchester United maintained second place after overcoming Portsmouth 4-1 at Fratton Park.

In the Merseyside derby, Liverpool got the bragging rights after downing Everton 2-nil at Goodison Park.

Also in another derby in the Midlands, Birmingham got the better of Wolverhampton Wanderers after an early goal was enough to take all three points.

Elsewhere Manchester City had their seventh draw in a row when they were held one-all at home by Hull City. Before this chain of draws started, Manchester City had not drawn a match in the league.

So this week I will take a look at the draws ladder as see how other teams trail Manchester City as they make draws their specialty:

TeamPlayedGoals ForPoints
Manchester City 13 107
Aston Villa 14 55
Stoke City 14 45
West Ham 14 95
Fulham 14 64
Hull City 15 54
Wolverhampton Wanderers 14 54
Birmingham City 14 23
Bolton 13 43
Everton 14 33
Blackburn 14 02
Burnley 14 42
Liverpool 14 42
Sunderland 14 42
Tottenham 14 32
Wigan 14 22
Arsenal 13 21
Manchester United 14 21
Portsmouth 14 01
Chelsea 14 00

So Aston Villa, West Ham and Stoke City are a close second to Man City with five draws each and Chelsea remains the only team yet to draw a match.

I was not surprised by the result in the Arsenal match but maybe a bit surprised by a 3-0 win but it could have been more than that. I can see Arsenal beating the smaller teams coming to the Emirates but Arsenal will struggle against the decent sides.

Colin, its interesting to see that the next league match for Arsenal will be against Stoke at home but after that the next match is away to Liverpool. That could be a very interesting match and I think Arsenal could win that one.
