South Africa fails to progress
The 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts South Africa failed to progress to the second round after finishing third in Group A.
The hosts won their last fixture against France 2-1 but the damage was done in their match against Uruguay when they lost 3-nil. Mexico therefore got second place on goal difference.
France, the 2006 finalists finished bottom of the group with no win but a draw and one goal.
In Group B, Argentina won the group with maximum points after beating Greece 2-nil with two second half goals.
South Korea joins them after managing a 2-all draw with Nigeria. Nigeria needed to win the match in order to reach the knockout stages but despite scoring first, they were unable to take advantage.
The next round of matches will decide groups C and D. In Group C England will play Slovenia whilst the United States will play Algeria.
In group D, Australia will play Serbia whilst Germany will face Ghana.
